- Musk Reveals No Plans Of Reinstating Controversial Accounts
Elon Musk is already making big plans for Twitter as its new owner says that the company is forming a content moderation council as a small step to content policy changes.
In a tweet on Friday, Musk said that a council with widely diverse viewpoints is going to be set up to make important moderation decisions at Twitter, The Verge writes.
Musk Assures That No Major Decisions Will Be Made Before The Council Meets
After owning the platform for just a brief time, the new Twitter owner is already laying out plans for the social media site, starting with creating a council to look over the platform’s content.
The Tesla CEO claims that no major changes will be made in Twitter’s content policy, but substantial changes will definitely occur.
As of the moment, the multibillionaire has not given names of possible council members, or has provided a timeline for the council’s creation.
Engadget also reports that Musk is looking into making the platform’s overall rule more lenient by limiting permanent bans on people.
The council plan suggests that Twitter’s new owner is taking time to analyze and implement newer approaches to moderate the content on the platform, and delegate some of that responsibility.
With this, the company assures advertisers on the platform that Twitter will not become disorganized, running ads alongside questionable posts.
According to Engadget, Musk is trying not to make another rash decision as he only recently fired multiple executives and employees of the company, Policy head Vijaya Gadde included.
This follows Musk’s claims that he does not agree with the existing moderation systems that Twitter currently has in place, The Verge writes.
Musk Reveals No Plans Of Reinstating Controversial Accounts
Describing himself as a free speech absolutist, Musk vows to restore the voices silenced on the social media site that might have been flagged or banned for some reason.
Tech Crunch writes that this is one of the reasons the CEO wants to convene with a council that will serve as a policy advisor for him and Twitter moving forward.
Should the SpaceX CEO decide to convene a council, he will be watched closely by Conservative critics who have long accused the platform of silencing right-wing views.
It is important to note that this controversy was sparked by the banning of Former United States President and Conservative leader Donal Trump from the platform after spewing hate and fake speech.
Musk is yet to say if there is any certainty in restoring Trump’s account before the council is official, but he has previously made a bold statement that anyone suspended will be “freed from Twitter jail.”
However, according to Tech Crunch, the content moderation council that Musk wants to push for might be unoriginal, since Twitter already has a trust and safety council to advise product and policy decisions.
This council is composed of 40 organizations and experts that oversees challenges in the platform’s policy areas as an advisory capacity, and not a decision-making body.
Meta, one of Twitter’s biggest competitions in the social networking industry, has already put in place a similar approach with its Oversight Board that rules on platform and moderation decisions.
